The European Union has declared 2012 as the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. The reality of an aged Europe, with the social and economic risks that this entails, has been decisive when it comes to approach this celebration in all member states.

The conviction that there is plenty of life after the age of 60, and that society must increasingly value the contribution of seniors, who had been underrated during the last three decades because of the general development policy in Europe, has been a determining factor in the proposal to encourage active ageing and the approach, collaboration and recovery of respect between generations.

Enjoying life more, not less, when we grow old, both at work and at home or in the community, is a fact that affects not only each person individually but also the society as a whole and for which we need to prepare our society in view of the demographic and social forecasts shown by scientific and socio-economic studies.

From the Permanent University and the Association of Students and Alumni of the Permanent University, we have been making considerable efforts in this direction for more than a decade now. Our task has been unflagging, both in the formative context and in the area of activities for personal development, active ageing promotion and dependency reduction. In this European Year, we want to join the initiative of raising awareness about the different problems, the best ways to cope with them, and the opportunities for personal development which are available to seniors within a society for all ages.

These are the premises from which we organise the CONFERENCE ON HEALTH FOR ACTIVE AGEING AND PROMOTION OF AUTONOMY IN AN INCLUSIVE AND INTERGENERATIONAL SOCIETY, which is going to be developed in collaboration with professionals and institutions specialised in the field of Health, the Alicante Town University Venue and the Vice-Rectorate of Extracurricular Activities. In the course of the Conference, the speakers will provide the knowledge, the scientific evidence and the latest breakthroughs in various fields of health which are of special interest to the social group of seniors with a view to improve their quality of life and promote an Active Ageing.
