CONTENT
The starting point was the ignorance in Spain of what it means to be a professional o an specialist in intergenerational practice, the way they work, their skills and abilities and how that affected to the achievements obtained by the Intergenerational Programs. The following is a summary of the three reasons why this project is necessary:
1) It is necessary to identify and evaluate the work of this professional figure, emergent in the field of social workers, in the Intergenerational Programs in order to find out if its activities are linked to acknowledged professional specialization fields (psychologists, educators, social workers, political scientists, sociologists, gerontologists, demographers, etc.) or if it is the start of a new line of specialization.
2) This identification must try to see if the work of these professionals is associated to a conception different that the one of the Intergenerational Programs, their theory, the policies that rule them and the practices used in their institutions and centers.
3) If, as it has been talked about in previous works, the figure of the intergenerational specialist has been working progressively as an specific professional designing, implementing, promoting and evaluating the intergenerational practice, with important achievements, it is urgent to know exhaustively the suppositions they base on, their practices and the skills linked to them. That way present and future decisions will be taken regarding the training and preparation of this professionals and the development of the Intergenerational Programs and how they affect those who participate in them.
Specific goals:
- Select a number of intergenerational programs in Spain using a doble criteria: geographical and of professional intervention. That way there will be participation of a wide range of professionals, agents associated to social, medical and legal sciences, etc.
- Confirm if these professionals act strictly according to their respective competence fields or if they introduce some strategies and skills that deal with intergenerations, not from the age point of view but focusing on relationships and encounters.
- Specify the training needs of those intergenerational specialists, whether or not they may be experts in other professional fields.
- Propose a corpus of skills and protocols, from the results of the analysis, specifically linked to the professional activities of the intergenerational specialist.
- Design a wide training program to prepare present and future integenerational specialists that will promote the professionalization of these specialists in the Spanish social, political, cultural, economic and professional system.
