Objectives

The existence of a digital divide within the population segment of senior citizens creates the general context where these institutions jointly work through their training programme in ICTs, following four essential lines, namely: improvement of learning techniques; enhancement of programme contents; promotion of basic skills (digital, social, creativity, foreign languages, ...); and reinforcement of the international projection of the participating institutions.

Content

An initial aim of this project is to take part and collaborate in these lines, where initiatives oriented towards improved quality of life and responsible citizenship within an ageing population and the fight against the digital divide acquire great relevance.

Inside this overall environment, our project will focus on University Programmes for Seniors, as essential formative agents in this respect, as well as on the need to train and guide their teaching staff towards training in digital skills that help them favour a more effective and contextualised type of learning from and for ICTs, better suited to the everyday social reality of this population segment. This project would consequently revolve around the training of trainers and management teams, staff that can exploit the adoption of different perspectives (learning techniques, contents, improved competences) in order to encourage and empower their older adult students as much as possible, so that the latter can face the challenge posed by ICTs. The aim consists not only in favouring a critical attitude in their utilisation but also one applied to the reality and needs of these students.

Seeking to achieve these aims, a number of training-centred mobility initiatives will be carried out in several EU countries (Finland, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Hungary, the United Kingdom and Estonia) under the following thematic areas (always in the field of ICTs and seniors): skills for the use of digital devices in daily life; ICT teaching from a new perspective; technological tools to improve learning outcomes; innovation and creativity through ICTs; Citizen reporting communities and implementation of applications based on the web 2.0 for language learning.

Informative and formative workshops will be carried out after each one of the mobilities for all social agents, the institutions, as well as the general public interested, in all the national consortium members, together with the organisation of a final seminar/lecture within the national framework of AEPUM with the most significant resulting aspects. A manual will also be prepared on a collaborative basis as a final compendium of this project.

In the light of all the above, its outcomes and impact will generally cover the following areas:

  • Exploiting national synergies due to the joint work of different University Programmes for Seniors inside a nationwide Association like AEPUM.
  • Taking advantage of international synergies, since the consortium belongs to a network of European contacts created on a collaborative basis which, thanks to these hosting and training centres, will serve to exchange best practices and reflect on project contents.
  • Increasing staff skills through formative programmes and activities addressed to adults and seniors, always around the idea of fighting against the digital divide, both from a content perspective (curriculum) and from that of learning techniques (teaching organisation), it all oriented to learning skills within the context of everyday life.
  • Improving the skills of students (as secondary beneficiaries), whose learning motivation can be boosted due to the possibility of applying what has been learnt in the classroom according to their tastes and their previous knowledge, as well as their professional and life background in an awareness-based, enriching atmosphere of immersion in information society.
  • Enhancing the involvement of the participating institutions in the social and territorial environment where they work, along with a greater visibility, oriented to the digital inclusion of senior population segments.

This all entails not only immediate but also long-term benefits due to the desired snowball effect with respect to other close institutions, both locally and on a national level (AEPUM), as well on an international basis (hosting institutions, IAUTA).
