Content
The population of the European Union is changing and growing old. Given that the Europeans have a longer and healthier life, the European Union is promoting policies that will integrate the older adults into the society, keeping them active. The OMS defines active aging as 'the process of optimization of the opportunities for health, participation and secutiry in order to improve the quality of life as people grow old'.” One of the determining factors of active aging is the psychological factor, specially the effectiveness that a person perceives of himself and the ability of imitation.
Education peer to peer can be defined as the process in which skilled and motivated people (peer to peer educators) carry out informal educative activities, organized with their peers (people of the same age, social class or with the same capacities) with the objetive of developing knowledge and skills. Some researches reveal that people listen to and personalize the messages, therefore, they change their attitude and behaviour if they think the messenger is like them and faces the same worries and pressures that they face.
This project wants to develop a methodology based in peer to peer education to promote active aging, in present small groups or off-site through the Internet. This education has as its objective increase each one's effectiveness and the ability of imitation of the participants (people older than 55).
Thanks to a strict diffusion plan, around 20.000 seniors will be informed of the project and also other people interested in aging. 1.300 people will participate: seniors and skilled educators.
