The act of appointing the Prof. Salvador Cabedo as Honorary Director of the Senior University took place on the 27th of April 2016 at 18:00 in the assembly hall Alfons el Magnánimo at the Faculty of Law and Economics.

Next year the University of Jaume I of Castelló will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Its 18-year training programme of the Senior University will be celebrated as well, which reaches the age of majority.

The Senior University was started at the Jaume I University of Castellón in 1998 by the professor Salvador Cabedo and his team. They were convinced that education is the most effective tool to build a fair and united society, where generations respect each other, support each other and live together in harmony.

At first 38 students took part in the first course; since then the number has been increasing up to 943 currently. From the beginning, the main aims of this education system were to encourage the participation of seniors in today’s society, providing a space to exchange cultural and scientific knowledge and experiences, thus encouraging them to improve their quality of life. This is achieved through a combination of theoretical and practical training and follow-up activities, in addition to a research project.

In this act, with a high level of attendance, the following people intervened: Prof. Adela Cortina with her lecture “The importance of Humanities in society”; Pili Escuder, coordinator of the Senior University; Elsa Martínez, Director of the Senior University; and Salvador Cabedo, Honorary Director of the Senior University.

The act was chaired by the Dean of the UJI, Vicent Climent, who was accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor of Studies and the President of the Social Council of the UJI.

In the act, Prof. Salvador Cabedo was congratulated in recognition of his important work by the academic representatives of the Senior University Programmes of the Valencian Public Universities: Esther Sitges (UMH), Amparo Pérez (UVEG); Ana Muñoz (UPV) and Concepción Bru (UA) on behalf of AEPUM.
